TATI

Tati is a short opera for 3 vocalists and a 13-piece chamber orchestra, commissioned by the Washington National Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. It was developed for the American Opera Initiative, a program which pairs and mentors composers and writers who are new to the medium of opera. Tati will premiere in a showcase at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (January 18) and Kaufman Music Center in New York City (January 23).

Maysoon, Connie, and Osvaldo are stranded inside a massive, dying, bio-engineered whale named Tati. A project of Connie's disbanded environmental fund, Tati the whale has become an unlikely home. Maysoon is nine months pregnant and due to give birth any minute. When Osvaldo finally spots a boat through Tati’s blowhole, they all have the chance to escape. But is it better for Maysoon to give birth into the confinement of Connie's "miracle whale," or risk the outside world, full of both danger and possibility?
